Last time I was near a lake, I watched a bird pick its way along the shoreline. It was also navigating near a chip bag, two candy wrappers, a plastic bag, and what appeared to be the remains of a styrofoam cup. And it didn't flinch. That image has stayed with me because of what it revealed.
